FAQs

• What is an NVQ?

An NVQ is a National Vocational Qualification. It is a work-based qualification designed to measure competence in a professional role.

An NVQ is different from a traditional taught course as it requires the individual to show what they currently do and how they have the underpinning knowledge required to do their job, as opposed to teaching and testing them on new knowledge.

To prove their competence, the individual is required to collect evidence from their workplace in line with the National Occupational Standards (NOS) of the NVQ.

• What is the equivalent level of an NVQ?

Due to the fact that NVQs are work-based qualifications, it is often difficult to give an exact academic equivalent. However, as a guide:

NVQ 3 is GCSE A level, National Certificate or Diploma

NVQ 4 equates to an undergraduate study level such as Higher National Diploma or Higher National Certificate

• What is the duration of the NVQ?

Individuals can work at their own pace. The time it takes for the learner to complete an NVQ may be affected by their workload, commitment, employer’s commitment and how easy it is to access the evidence as required to meet national standards.

As a guide:

Level 2 NVQ 6-9 months depending on the average number of units required.

Level 3 NVQ 9-18 months depending on the average number of units required.

Level 4 NVQ 12-24 months depending on the average number of units required.

• Where will the NVQ be delivered and assessed?

NVQs are an assessment of current competence in the workplace. An assessor will visit the learner in the workplace.

Organising and cross referencing the evidence and compiling the portfolio will also need to be done. The learner may be required to complete this at home if they do not have enough time during their working hours.
